GST on advances for services, declared when the money arrives

A customer who paid ahead for a service owed GST that month, and nothing declared it: the tax waited for the invoice, sometimes months later. Retainers and receipts marked as an advance for services now declare it when the money arrives, in the return and in the books, on the phone as on the desktop.

What changed

📅

Declared when the money arrives

A payment on a retainer invoice declares the GST in its service lines in the month it is received. GSTR-1 lists it in Table 11A, by place of supply and rate, and 3B adds it to 3.1(a).

✅

Any receipt can be an advance for services

Recording money received, tick An advance for services and choose the rate. What it leaves on account carries GST. Money for goods paid ahead carries none, as the law says.

↩

Taken back when the invoice uses it

When an invoice in a later month uses the advance, the GST already paid on it comes off that month in Table 11B, so the invoice’s own GST is not paid twice. An invoice in the same month uses it before anything is declared.

💰

A refund takes it off

Refund money held on account and its GST comes off in the month of the refund, in the return and in the books.

📒

In the books too

The tax waits in a new account, GST on advances, against Output GST, until the invoice or the refund takes it back. The customer’s advance stays the whole sum they paid, so Output GST in the ledger is what 3B says.

🔒

A filed month stays still

Once GSTR-1 for a month is marked filed, a change that would move the GST on an advance in that month is refused. Its reference and notes can still be put right.

Does this change anything you already have?

Advances received before 1 October 2026 stay as they were, and an older advance used by an invoice later takes nothing off. Nothing recorded before today is marked as an advance for services, so a receipt received in October is declared only once you open it and mark it. A retainer paid since 1 October is declared on its service lines on its own: a line is a service when its item is a service, or, with no item, when its SAC code starts with 99.

1 GB storage per workspace (organisation)

Only want this one module?

Individual modules are sold on their own alongside the plans. See every module’s price.

What about storage?

A single module includes 1 GB of storage per workspace (organisation) and Full Suite includes 5 GB per workspace (organisation): documents, attachments, file versions and photographs, counted together for everyone in it, not per user. Add more at any time in tiers, or move to Full Suite and take the larger allowance with it. Nothing is deleted if you run close; uploads are refused with a reason, and what you already have stays exactly where it is.

Annual or monthly?

Both. Annual works out cheaper per month and is charged once at the start; monthly costs a little more and can be stopped at the end of any cycle. The card shows the per-user-per-month figure on both, so the two are comparable at a glance rather than by arithmetic.
