What actually went in the box

Between "the customer ordered six kettles" and "a courier took them away" is a job nothing here recorded: somebody at a bench putting four in one carton and two in another.

The two days nothing was written down

Until now the only record of goods being dealt with was the shipment, and a shipment is raised at the moment stock leaves. So a box packed on Tuesday and collected on Thursday did not exist on Wednesday, and when half an order turned up at the other end, nothing could say which box had held what.

Packages is one record per box. The slip number that gets taped to the carton, the items and quantities inside it, and, where goods are tracked that closely, the exact serial numbers or the batch that went in.

Packing does not move stock, on purpose

The goods are still yours. They are on a bench instead of a shelf, and they leave the ledger when the shipment does, exactly as before. Taking them off at packing as well would count the same units out twice, and there is no honest way to net that back afterwards.

What packing does enforce is the arithmetic somebody would otherwise be doing on a clipboard. You cannot pack more than was ordered. The same unit cannot be in two boxes. A unit that is not on the shelf cannot be packed. And how much is still to pack is summed from the boxes themselves every time it is asked, rather than kept in a column that would eventually disagree with them.

What a package carries

▤

A slip per box

Numbered from your own series, or typed in by hand. One box, one slip, because the slip is what gets taped to the carton.

◎

The exact units

Serial numbers and batches per box, so a warranty claim a year later can be answered.

⌛

Its own history

Packed, repacked, shipped, delivered: in order, in its own tab.

Working the boxes out before you tape one shut

Give it the cartons you actually own (inside dimensions, and what each will carry) and it works out how few boxes the order takes and where every unit sits, drawn so you can turn it over and disagree with it. Then it writes a slip per box in one go.

We would rather say plainly what this is: arithmetic, not intelligence. It packs the heaviest thing first, into the lowest position that holds it, trying the six ways up it could go. Nothing is left floating unsupported, nothing heavy ends up resting on something much lighter (that is what packing heaviest-first buys you), and the carton’s weight limit is kept. It gives the same answer twice for the same order, so a packer who disagrees with it can be shown exactly what it did.

What it cannot know is which physical unit. A serial number is not a size, and no arrangement of cartons says whether SN-0007 or SN-0011 went in box two. So it asks, per box, rather than inventing an answer.

Does this affect anything you already have?

No. Nothing about shipping changes, stock is valued exactly as before, and orders already part-delivered are untouched. Packages is a record that did not exist rather than a change to one that did. If you ship without packing, carry on shipping without packing.

1 GB storage per workspace (organisation)

Only want this one module?

Individual modules are sold on their own alongside the plans. See every module’s price.

What about storage?

A single module includes 1 GB of storage per workspace (organisation) and Full Suite includes 5 GB per workspace (organisation): documents, attachments, file versions and photographs, counted together for everyone in it, not per user. Add more at any time in tiers, or move to Full Suite and take the larger allowance with it. Nothing is deleted if you run close; uploads are refused with a reason, and what you already have stays exactly where it is.

Annual or monthly?

Both. Annual works out cheaper per month and is charged once at the start; monthly costs a little more and can be stopped at the end of any cycle. The card shows the per-user-per-month figure on both, so the two are comparable at a glance rather than by arithmetic.
