Not every referral goes through a lead. A builder may hand you a buyer who walks in ready to order, and you add them straight as a customer. Set Referred by on the customer and the referral is recorded from that moment.
- Open the customer, or add them.
- In the Account section, set Referred by to the partner.
- Save.
How a customer's referral differs from a lead's
A lead converts once, so its referral has no clock. A customer keeps buying, so a referral recorded on a customer counts for a limited time: the partner’s window, 12 months from the referral unless the partner says otherwise. A deal or a document raised for the customer inside that window is credited to the partner; one raised after it is your own business. See How long a referred customer counts.
A customer converted from a referred lead
Nothing to do: the customer took the partner from the lead, with the date the lead was referred. Their window runs from that date, not from the conversion, so a lead that took four months to convert does not get four extra months.
Customers added before the module was switched on are credited to nobody. To credit one, set Referred by on it; the window starts from that day.
Use cases
- A builder brings a flat owner who orders the same day: add the customer with Referred by set, raise the quotation, and it is credited to the builder.
- An existing customer starts buying again because an interior designer recommended you for a new house: set Referred by on the customer. Their earlier invoices stay as they were; new business from today counts for the designer.
What will catch you out
Setting Referred by on a customer starts the window that day. A customer referred today and invoiced in thirteen months is not credited, unless the partner’s Counts for is longer than twelve months.
Checking it worked
- The customer shows the partner in Referred by, with Change beside it.
- The partner’s Customers tab lists the customer.
- On the partner’s page, a customer referred directly counts under Referred and under Became customers, for the period in which it was referred.
