Before you start

What your Tally company needs switched on, which modules and permissions you need here, and why the first import should go into a copy.

Ten minutes with this list saves an afternoon of reading Tally’s Exceptions report.

Which release you useHelp, About (or the release shown on the start screen)TallyPrime 3.0 changed where a customer’s GSTIN and an item’s HSN code are kept. You choose your release in Set-up
GST is switched onF11, Statutory and Taxation (Enable Goods and Services Tax: Yes)Without it, the tax ledgers and the GSTIN on customers mean nothing to Tally
Bill-wise details are keptF11, Accounting (Maintain bill-wise details: Yes)Every invoice goes with its own bill reference, and every payment is set against it. Without bill-wise, the references are dropped and payments land “on account”
Inventory is on, if you send stock itemsF11, Inventory (Maintain inventory, Integrate accounts with inventory)Item invoices move stock in Tally. Only needed if you switch on Send invoices with stock items
More than one godown, if you use warehousesF11, Inventory (Maintain multiple godowns: Yes)Goods go out of the warehouse named on the invoice line
The date your books beginThe company’s “Books beginning from” dateTally refuses vouchers dated before it. Put the same date in Set-up, as Send nothing dated before
The exact company nameThe company list when you open TallyTyped into Set-up exactly as Tally shows it

Test in a copy first. Create a separate test company (Alt+K, Create), or restore a backup of your company under a new name (Alt+Y, Restore), and import there until you are happy with what you see. Never try the link for the first time in the company you file GST returns from.

Tally running in Educational mode accepts vouchers only on the 1st, 2nd and 31st of a month, so most of a test file will be refused there for that reason alone. Use a licensed copy.

  • Sales documents switched on. This is what Tally needs at the very least. Purchases need Procurement too, and stock-item invoices need Inventory. See What you can send, by module and plan.
  • Your business state filled in, under Settings, Organisation. Every GST split is worked out against it.
  • Customers and vendors with a state: a GSTIN, a place of supply or the state on the address. A customer with no state at all cannot have their GST split known.
  • The right permissions: Tally set-up to change the set-up, Export to Tally to make the files, and permission to see the records you are sending. See Who can set it up and send.
