Voucher types
Each kind of document goes in as a voucher type. The defaults are Tally’s own:
| Document | Goes in as |
|---|---|
| Invoice | Sales |
| Bill of supply | Sales |
| Credit note | Credit Note |
| Purchase bill | Purchase |
| Debit note | Debit Note |
| Payment received | Receipt |
| Payment made | Payment |
Change one only if your company uses its own voucher type, for example a separate Bill of Supply type, or Sales GST. Type it exactly as Tally names it.
Your own invoice numbers go to Tally as the voucher number. If the voucher type in Tally numbers itself (Automatic numbering), Tally uses its own number instead. Your number is still in the narration of every voucher, as “Invoice INV/2026-27/0042 from JAI CRM”, so it can always be found. If you want your numbers in Tally, set the voucher type’s numbering to Manual.
Units
With Send invoices with stock items on, a card lists every unit your items use. For each one:
- Name in Tally is what the unit is called there. Change it if your Tally calls “Nos” “No.” or “Pcs” “Pieces”.
- GST unit code is the unit quantity code (UQC) GSTR-1 reports quantities in. The usual ones are filled in for you.
| Unit here | Filled in as |
|---|---|
| Nos | NOS (numbers) |
| Pcs | PCS (pieces) |
| Kg | KGS (kilograms) |
| Gram | GMS (grammes) |
| Litre | LTR (litres) |
| Metre | MTR (meters) |
| Sq ft | SQF (square feet) |
| Box | BOX |
| Set | SET (sets) |
| Hour, Day, Month | OTH (others): these are services, which GSTR-1 reports without a quantity |
| A unit of your own | OTH, until you choose its code |
Counted units, such as numbers, pieces and boxes, are created with no decimal places. Measured ones, such as kilograms and litres, get three.
Tally does not let a stock item’s unit change once the item has been used. Get the unit right before the first import.
Bank accounts
Each bank account you keep here is listed with the Tally ledger it is. A payment received into or paid from that account posts to that ledger. It comes filled in with the account’s own name, so change it to match Tally, for example “HDFC Bank A/c 4421”.
A payment in cash posts to the Cash ledger. A payment that names no bank account posts to the Bank (when none is named) ledger from the ledger list.
