Let customers pay online

Connect your own payment gateway. The money goes to your account, not ours.

An invoice a customer can pay from the page they are reading gets paid sooner than one that ends with a bank account number.

Set it up in Settings → Online payments.

It is your gateway and your money

You connect an account you hold. Your keys, your settlement, your account. The money never passes through us.

That matters for two reasons. You keep whatever rate you negotiated with your gateway. And you are not waiting on a third party to pass your own money on.

The ten gateways

Mostly IndianMostly international
Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, CCAvenue, PhonePe, Paytm, Instamojo, AirpayStripe, PayPal

Each asks for its own credentials and the screen names them. There is also manual, which is not a gateway at all — it means a bank transfer somebody reconciles by hand.

What the customer does

  1. They open the share link for the invoice.
  2. They press Pay.
  3. They land on the gateway’s own page and pay there.
  4. They come back.

No card number ever reaches this system. The customer types it on the gateway’s page, on the gateway’s domain. A gateway that cannot work that way is not offered.

How the payment gets recorded

When the gateway confirms it, over its own signed channel. Not when the customer comes back to the page.

That distinction is the whole of the security here. A return URL is just a web address, and a web address can be typed by anybody. If the invoice were marked paid because somebody reached the “thank you” page, then anybody who could read the address could mark any invoice paid. So the page the customer returns to is only a page — the money is recorded when the bank says the money moved.

A payment is also started on your side before the customer is sent off, so that an amount arriving for a payment nobody began is an amount belonging to nobody, and gets held rather than guessed at.

Part payments

Where your gateway and your settings allow it, a customer can pay part of an invoice. The rest stays outstanding and ages normally.

Before you switch it on

  1. Get your live keys from the gateway, not the test ones.
  2. Paste them into Settings → Online payments. You do this — nobody should be sending gateway keys to anybody, including us.
  3. Send yourself an invoice for ₹1 and pay it.
  4. Check it came back as paid and that the money reached your settlement account.

Keys are secrets. Anyone holding them can take payments in your name. They are stored encrypted here, they are never shown again once saved, and they should never be sent over WhatsApp or email.
